For a while, I have been looking for a good cozy mystery set against a background of a gardener. I feel I have found it in this series. I like it enough to download the next two books. The writing flows easily and the characters are developed with a back story of The main character. The gardening and environment issues are correct. The mystery is woven into the story so it hard knows the villain. We have a small town and the protagonist is slowly developing a romance with the chief of police. We have a handicapped child and cat and dogs are being added to the characters as they are rescue animals. There is snobbery present in the area. The problem I see too many editing mistakes. Currently, there seven books In the series. In the first book, Catherine Jewell has moved to the area and led a small nursery and works part-time as the botanist for the Elmwood Gardens. The administer of the garden will release a blue rose (much desire in botany circles) to the enthusiasts of the road world in a major festival. The administer is not like by anyone because of his negativity. At the festival, he is found dead The first murder in the town in 10 year

The Blue Rose A Catherine Jewell Mystery Volume 1 Gloria Alden 9781481012591 Books Reviews
Great mystery book and just finished her second book, Daylillies for Emily's Garden. Can't wait to read the next in the series. I was kept guessing throughout. Great characters.
This is one of those books you cant put down. The word descriptions are detailed and great. Loved the book and did not figure out the "who done it" till found out in the end. Very enjoyable. Cant wait for more of her books.
Although this could be considered a "gardening cozy " it is well written and tightly plotted, with well developed characters and enough red herrings to keep you guessing until almost the end. An engrossing, enjoyable read.
All the elements of a comfortable cozy mystery read are here, from the heart-warming characters to the comfortable setting to the mystery with its multiple possible suspects and twisting plot to the details about the setting and the character's interests.. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recomment it to anyone who likes cozy mysteries. And anyone with an interest in gardening who enjoys fiction!
A very entertaining read. The descriptions are not only insightful, they put you in the garden. I could feel myself walking through the house, smelling the roses. Catherine Jewell, the heroine and sleuth, is easy to understand. Running her own consultant business keeps her running. The plot is action packed, with lots of twists and turns. This is a who-done-it, with an Agatha Christi feel.
Nice feel good cozy, for anyone who loves the garden. I'll be reading more
Just found these mysteries by Gloria Alden! I have enjoyed reading all 7 in a row. It was like meeting and getting to know a new friend and her friends. Enjoyed the mysteries themselves and the way the characters interacted and grew. Very fun reads and I didn't want them to stop. True cozy mystery. Recommend them all.
I keep meaning to write a long, complicated review of this book, and I finally decided that I'm going to just tell the world it's a crafty, cunning, twisty, thoroughly brilliant cozy. The scene with the cat at the end is just the absolute topper. Alden throws in the most delicious red herrings -- you just want to go into her garden, steal all the fragrant herbs, and enjoy the scents, flavors, and surprises. Many mystery writers, even best-selling ones, don't have Alden's gift for nailing characterization. I've read so many books published by major publishers that just don't punch my buttons the way this one does. Great for reading on dull winter days, and as a bonus, you can wander Gloria Alden's thoroughly believable fictional garden until the very end, when a newly-aroused hankering for blooms and beauty and bolts from the blue (roses) send you after the next in the series. PS the garden in the story is in a small midwestern town, but it sure reminds me of my beloved Huntington Gardens.
